Matisse studied at the Académie Julian and Gustave Moreau's workshop. He copied a great number of old masters in Louvre, especially Chardin and Poussin, from whom he adopted solid plastic form (Fruit and Coffeepot, 1897-1898). He went through fascination with impressionism but in search for extreme colour intensity, vividness and power, for purity and sonority unparalleled with the visible he came to simplicity and flatness of forms. Interested only in formal tasks, particularly in painting, he abandoned plot narration. His subjects are the most simple elements such as bright fabrics and armchairs, flowers, nude or seminude bodies. He doesn't pay attention to lights, his works lack volume and space. According to this manner the floor flatness and walls are deliberately merged in Seville Still Life with only objects' disposition to preserve a trace of volume.

Matisse's lines are as always laconic, sophisticated and rhythmic (The Moroccan Amido). The form simplicity, however, doesn't exclude the depiction of accurately observed characteristic poses, gestures and even conditions (Family Portrait). Extreme colour sonority, colourful surfaces undivided by half-tones, form and volume conventionality with its schematic lines are the qualities typical for Matisse's works. The Dance and The Music painting-panels (1910) were done by the artist on the Moscow art collector P. I. Shchukin's request for his mansion. Not only the theme is common for these panels but also the expressive means. .
